Workshop #1
You will provide your class members with a draft of an in-progress piece. The piece can be in any medium (alphabetic writing, web text, video, podcast, etc.). Please do not submit anything over 6,000 words or over 25 minutes in length.
Alphabetic writing should be in Word format. For digital pieces, please upload to a hosting site and provide us with an unlisted or private link.
Your draft should be as complete as possible in order for you to take advantage of the feedback you will receive from your classmates and myself.
You will receive written feedback from every member of the class. We will also workshop your piece for about 30 minutes during class.
We are going to honor the writing workshop code:
1. During two thirds of the discussion, you will not speak. Instead, you will listen and take notes as people discuss your work. Write down what they’re saying. Don’t feel the need to respond or explain your choices. After all, you can’t explain yourself to those who are reviewing your work prior to publication or to those who are reading it post-publication. Just listen and take copious notes.
2. During the last third of the discussion, you can ask questions you have about the piece based on the writing process, intended publication venue, or what your classmates have been saying about it. If you feel you need to address some of the comments with an explanation, you can do so, but remember that the workshop is for you and that the best thing you can do is use the time we’re spending on your piece to make sure you understand what worked and what didn’t work so you can use that knowledge in your rewrite.
Assignment Delivery
There are four Workshop Sections (A, B, C, and D). You will sign up to workshop your piece during one of the sections and that will determine the dates during which you present. Before class time a week prior to your workshop, you will go to the course’s Google Drive folder titled “Workshop #1” and find the Google folder titled under your name. The name of the file you upload should be Workshop #1, followed by your last name, i.e. Workshop #1 Last Name.
