Workshop #2
You will evaluate the suggestions we made for writing your piece in Workshop #1 and submit a revised version of the same piece for workshop.
Alphabetic writing should be in Word format. For digital pieces, please upload them to a hosting site and provide us with an unlisted or private link.
As you evaluate the suggestions, take time to revisit everyone’s comments. Read them once. Put them down for a couple days and then read them again. They will make a lot more sense then. Ask yourself the following questions: Were there areas that various readers liked or were confused by? Did we get the overall gist of what you were trying to do? Did something arise in the discussion that sends you on a different direction that is more exciting to you than the original one? Is this in fact two pieces instead of one? Does your piece need to evolve in a different medium?
Once you have a sense of what direction you want to go (and feel free to use your writing journal to help you figure that out or to talk about it in class during our weekly check-in), rewrite your piece.
When you are finished rewriting your piece, draft a rebuttal memo to us where you thank us for our feedback and explain which suggested changes you made and which suggested changes you did not make, as well as why you chose to omit those changes. This is a good practice to get into for your publishing ventures. Editors and reviewers appreciate knowing that their suggestions have been heard and considered and that some of the revisions suggested have been made, as well as knowing why other suggested revisions have not been made. The key difference here is that you usually hear from two reviewers and one or two editors, while in our class you’re taking in the feedback of seven different people. Don’t feel like you have to address every single comment but go back through your notes from our discussion of your work, pick the main threads discussed, and address them in your memo.
We will follow the workshop format outlined in Workshop #1.
Assignment Delivery
The date for your second workshop depends on your section. Your revised version and rebuttal memo are due the Thursday before your workshop. Before class time a week prior to your workshop, you will go to the course’s Google Drive folder titled “Workshop #2” and find the Google folder titled under your name. Please add your memo to the drive as well. The name of the file you upload should be Workshop #2, followed by your last name, i.e. Workshop #2 Last Name.
